What is Practice Management Software (PMS)

Practice Management Software automates administrative and financial tasks for medical practices. Most PMS systems contain large set of data including list of insurance companies, lists of diagnosis and procedures, referring physicians, facilities, providers and more. The system allows medical practices to enter and track patient, schedule appointment, submit insurance claim, collect payment and print out reports.

Electronic medical records (EMR) and PMS System are often connected. EMR system is a system that contains computerized medical records of patients. The integration allow medical practices to access patient records via pms system. Medical practices can now deal clinical matters, administrative and financial tasks more efficiently.

Three common type of Practice Management Software are found in the market. These include Internet-based PMS, desktop-based PMS, and client-server PMS.

Desktop-based PMS is normally installed on one computer. It stores its data in the computer that it is installed. All users who need to work with the system needs to physically be presented in front of this computer.

Client-server PMS system needs a server. A server version of pms is installed on this server. All data will be stored in the server. Users who want to access the system must login using a workstation which has client software installed.

The centralization of patient data makes it easy to manage. However, The cost of running a client-server PMS system is higher due to cost of running the server. Web-based PMS system a cheaper alternative. The system and data are stored in a web server located at a remote location. Through a web browser, users can access the system from any computer. Because the patient data is now stored at a remote site, the chances of the date getting stolen or tempered has increased.
